Franciacorta is a sparkling wine from the Italian province of Brescia (Lombardy) with DOCG status.
It is produced using the traditional method from grapes grown within the boundaries of the Franciacorta area, on the hills between the southern shore of Lake Iseo and the city of Brescia.
It obtained DOC status in 1967, the denomination then also included still red and white wines.
Since 1995, the DOCG designation has applied exclusively to sparkling wines from the area.
The grapes for Franciacorta are grown in strictly delineated vineyards, with soil conditions described as mineral-rich, grainy, calcareous gravel and sandy moraine soils overlaying a calcareous bedrock
With Franciacorta, added sugar fix tends to be much lower than Champagne, or not used at all, because it’s simply not necessary given the strategic position of the vines and the warmer weather.
Franciacorta wines have a thin and persistent bubble, with a refined and continuous perlage.
